Improve Your Fitness By Playing Golf

chat Improve Your Fitness By Playing Golf

You may not think of golf as a great, simple way to get healthier. It’s a silly game at times - hitting a little, white ball around a field to get it into a hole in the least amount of shots.

But as you are chasing that little ball around, you are also getting some much needed ex-ercise! Any sport that gets you off your backside and outdoors is well worth playing and golf has so many additional health benefits.

The opportunity to improve your fitness is a great reason to play more golf. It can:

• Build muscle tone,
• Improve endurance, and
• Burn calories.

Inside Golf magazine initiated a study of over 1,000 Australian golfers that found walking 18 holes equates to a total distance of just under 10km.

Playing 18 holes burns around 1,000 calories in four to five hours, plus additional calories used to swing the club and push a buggy. The study found middle and high handicappers walked the furthest, followed by low handicappers, but not my much.

Walking nine holes while carrying a bag or pushing a cart burns about 720 calories on average, according to a report from Rose Medical Centre in Denver (USA).  The same study found golfers who walk for nine holes without carrying their bags burn an average of 613 calories. Players who ride in carts burn an average of 411 calories playing just nine holes.  Golf also poses a lower risk of injury compared with contact sports. Warming up and prac-ticing your golf swing before the game may reduce any risk of injury.
